NASA announces Artemis 3 candidate landing site regions
Posted: Sun, Aug 28, 2022, 6:30 AM ET (1030 GMT)
NASA announced Aug. 19 it has selected 13 regions around the south pole of the moon as potential launching locations for Artemis 3. The regions, each 15x15 kilometers, contain multiple specific candidate landing sites for the mission, the first crewed landing of the Artemis program scheduled for no earlier than 2025. NASA says the locations meet both technical requirements for a landing site and are of scientific interest, such as access to nearly permanently shadowed regions that could harbor ice deposits. NASA hopes to narrow down that list of landing sites about 18 months before launch, with specific locations dependent on lighting conditions for a given launch date.
