Japan's Hayabusa2 spacecraft returned samples of an asteroid to Earth on Dec. 5. The spacecraft's sample return canister landed in the Woomera Prohibited Area of South Australia around 1 pm EST (1800 GMT), and was recovered within two hours. The capsule, carrying material that Hayabusa2 collected from the asteroid Ryugu, separated from the spacecraft a day earlier. Hayabusa2 flew by Earth as the sample canister reentered, and will go on to an extended mission to visit the asteroid 1998 KY26 in 2031.
