Posted: Mon, Aug 13, 2012, 8:27 AM ET (1227 GMT)
Mars Science Laboratory illustration (NASA/JPL) NASA's Mars rover Curiosity is in the middle of a software upgrade that project officials say will prepare the rover for scientific activities on the Martian surface. The four-day upgrade, which started Friday, will install a new version of the software needed to operate the rover. The new version includes routines needed to operate scientific equipment and to drive on the Martian surface while avoiding obstacles. Curiosity, which landed safely within Gale Crater a week ago, is in the midst of a gradual checkout of its systems as it prepares to begin scientific activities over the next several weeks.
