Posted: Thu, Jan 15, 2004, 8:48 AM ET (1348 GMT)
Spirit image of lander and rover tracks (NASA/JPL) The Mars rover Spirit rolled off its lander and onto the Martian surface early Thursday. Spacecraft controllers received confirmation shortly after 5 am EST (1000 GMT) that the rover had moved onto the surface, traveling about three meters from the lander before stopping. Images transmitted from a rear-view camera on the rover showed the lander and the tracks the rover's wheels made on the surface. The rover is expected to stay parked at its current location for a few days to perform some scientific work as scientists and controllers plot out its route towards a nearby crater.
