Scotland’s richest man has invested more than £1.4 million in a new spaceport on Shetland after opposing a rival scheme.

Anders Holch Povlsen, the Danish billionaire who is Scotland’s largest private landowner, has ploughed money into the Shetland Space Centre after taking legal action to stop a site being built in the Highlands due to environmental concerns. His company Wildland Limited, which owns estates near the proposed Sutherland Space Hub site, lodged a petition for judicial review earlier this month over the decision to give it planning approval.

Wildland’s sister company Wild Ventures Limited has now secured “a significant minority investment” of £1.43 million in the Shetland site on the island of Unst. The firm believes that the Shetland location and its business model afford
