NASA says it is keeping its options open to preserve a chance to land astronauts on the Moon in 2028. At a briefing Friday, agency officials said they are working with both Blue Origin and SpaceX on revised lander architectures, and will consider both for as long as possible before choosing which lander to use on Artemis 4. The agency also said it will decide next year whether Artemis 4 will use a new uper stage derived from the Centaur of the last remaining ICPS stage used on the first two SLS launches. NASA is working to launch Artemis 3, a test flight in low Earth orbit, in mid-2027, but acknowledged they are about 90 days behind schedule because of supply chain issues for the landers.
