PLD Space launches first suborbital rocket
Posted: Sat, Oct 14, 2023, 11:36 AM ET (1536 GMT) Spanish launch startup PLD Space flew its first suborbital rocket Oct. 5. The company's Miura 1 rocket lifted off from a Spanish government facility at 8:19 pm EDT (0019 GMT Oct. 6). The rocket reached a peak altitude of 46 kilometers, short of the 80 kilometers originally planned for the mission, but PLD Space said it changed the trajectory for "safety reasons" to minimize the time the rocket was near the launch site. The company called the brief suborbital flight a success, demonstrating technologies it plans to use in its Miura 5 orbital rocket.
