Sanctions to "degrade" Russian space program but not affect ISS cooperation
Posted: Sat, Feb 26, 2022, 11:13 AM ET (1613 GMT)
The United States is imposing new sanctions on Russia that will "degrade" its space program but will not affect cooperation on the International Space Station. President Biden announced the sanctions Thursday in response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine, including strict export controls on key technologies. Those measures and similar ones by allies "will degrade their aerospace industry, including their space program," Biden said. NASA, in a statement late Thursday, said the new export control measures will still allow civil space cooperation between NASA and Roscosmos to proceed, with no change to ISS operations. The head of Roscosmos, Dmitry Rogozin, sharply criticized the new sanctions in a series of tweets Thursday, but said early Friday that he welcomed NASA's statement even as Russia continues to review and plan a response to those sanctions.
