Atlas 5 launches GEO inspection satellites

Atlas 5 launch of USSF-8 (ULA) A United Launch Alliance Atlas 5 launched a pair of space surveillance satellite for the US Space Force Friday. The Atlas 5 511 lifted off from Cape Canaveral, Florida, at 2 pm EST (1900 GMT) on the USSF-8 mission. The rocket's Centaur upper stage deployed its payload of the Geosynchronous Space Situational Awareness Program (GSSAP) 5 and 6 satellites about seven hours later. The two satellites will operate in GEO, monitoring other satellites there. The launch was the first of the 511 version of the Atlas 5 with a single solid-rocket booster and a five-meter payload fairing.
