FAA grounds SpaceShipTwo to investigate issue on July flight
Posted: Sat, Sep 4, 2021, 1:03 PM ET (1703 GMT)
SpaceShipTwo ascent, July 2021 (Virgin Galactic) The FAA has grounded Virgin Galactic's SpaceShipTwo while an investigation into a problem on the vehicle's July flight continues. The FAA said Thursday that it won't allow flights to resume until it approves a final mishap investigation report into the July flight or determines the issues during that flight don't affect public safety. On that July flight the vehicle strayed from its assigned airspace, reportedly after pilots ignored a warning during the vehicle's ascent. The FAA statement came hours after Virgin Galactic said it had scheduled its next SpaceShipTwo flight, a dedicated research flight for the Italian Air Force, for late September or early October.
