The FCC announced the outcome of the $9.2 billion Rural Digital Opportunity Fund (RDOF) Phase 1 auction, with SpaceX one of the biggest winners. The funding will be used over the next 10 years to help the winning providers bring broadband service to some 5.2 million unserved homes and businesses in rural parts of the United States. SpaceX will provide service in 35 states under its award using its Starlink constellation. The only other satellite company to win RDOF funding was Hughes Network Systems, which received $1.27 million to provide service in a single state.
