Intelsat declares communications satellite a total loss
Posted: Sun, Apr 21, 2019, 10:08 AM ET (1408 GMT)
Intelsat-29e illustration (Intelsat) Intelsat announced Thursday it had declared its Intelsat-29e satellite a total loss after it experienced problems earlier this month. The spacecraft suffered a fuel leak April 7 after just three years in geostationary orbit, followed by communications problems. Ground-based telescopes spotted debris trailing from the satellite, which is now drifting in the geostationary arc. Intelsat said Thursday it has formed a failure review board with Boeing, the satellite's manufacturer, to conduct a "comprehensive analysis of the cause of the anomaly." Customers who had used Intelsat-29e are being moved to other satellites.
