NASA making final bid to restore contact with Opportunity Mars rover
Posted: Sat, Feb 2, 2019, 10:25 AM ET (1525 GMT)
Mars Exploration Rover (NASA/JPL) NASA is making new, and potentially final, efforts to restore communications with the Mars rover Opportunity. JPL announced January 25 it would send new commands to the rover to address "low-likelihood" events that could be keeping the rover from transmitting back to Earth. Controllers have not heard from Opportunity since June, when a massive dust storm deprived the rover of solar power. The project manager for Opportunity acknowledged that the probability of ever hearing from the rover again "is decreasing each day" but that the project will continue every effort to do so.
