New Horizons awakens for final stretch to Pluto
Posted: Tue, Dec 9, 2014, 8:54 AM ET (1354 GMT)
New Horizons illustration (JHUAPL) NASA's New Horizons spacecraft awakened from an electronic hibernation late Saturday for the final time prior to its July encounter to Pluto. Spacecraft controllers received signals shortly before 10 pm EST Saturday (0300 GMT Sunday) confirming that the spacecraft has switched back to active mode, as planned. The spacecraft, launched in January 2006, has spent most of its journey in hibernation to limit wear and tear on the spacecraft and reduce operations costs. New Horizons is on track to fly past Pluto and its moons in July 2015, and will remain in active mode from now through the encounter.
