Atlas 5 launch of MUOS-2 (ULA) An Atlas 5 rocket successfully launched a mobile communications satellite for the Navy on Friday morning. The Atlas 5 551 lifted off from Cape Canaveral, Florida, at 9:00 am EDT (1330 GMT) Friday and placed the Mobile User Objective System 2 (MUOS-2) satellite into geosynchronous transfer orbit about three hours later. The launch was delayed briefly late in the countdown due to high upper-level winds. The spacecraft, built by Lockheed Martin and weighing nearly 6,800 kilograms at launch, is the second in a series of satellites for the US Navy to provide mobile voice and data communications for its forces.
