Atlas launches missile warning satellite

Atlas 5 launch of SBIRS-2 (ULA) An Atlas 5 rocket successfully launched the second in the latest generation of missile early warning satellites on Tuesday. The Atlas 5 401 lifted off on schedule from Cape Canaveral at 5:21 pm EDT (2121 GMT) carrying the Space Based Infrared System 2 (SBIRS 2) satellite for the US Air Force. The satellite, built by Lockheed Martin, will be located in GEO and provide the military with early warning of missile launches through its infrared sensors. The launch was the fourth of an Atlas 5 rocket in as many months, the fastest launch tempo for the vehicle since its introduction in 2002.
