Colorado seeks spaceport designation for Denver-area airport
Posted: Fri, Dec 9, 2011, 8:02 AM ET (1302 GMT)
The governor of the state of Colorado said this week the state will seek to obtain a spaceport license from the federal government for an airport just east of Denver. Gov. John Hickenlooper said he has contacted the FAA about plans to get a launch site operators license for the Front Range Airport. The airport, a general aviation facility several miles southeast of Denver International Airport, features two 8,000-foot runways capable of expansion to 10,000 feet, and would be used for spacecraft that launch and land horizontally. State officials hope to have a spaceport license as early as the end of 2012. No vehicle developers have indicated specific plans to fly out of the airport.
