Spacewalkers complete ISS pump replacement
Posted: Tue, Aug 17, 2010, 8:06 AM ET (1206 GMT)
ISS EVA on 2010 Aug 16 (NASA) Two spacewalkers successfully completed the replacement of a broken coolant pump outside the International Space Station on Monday. Doug Wheelock and Tracy Caldwell Dyson spent seven hours and 20 minutes outside the ISS on Monday, installing a spare ammonia pump module for the station's cooling system. The two hooked up fluid and electrical connections, and ground controllers confirmed that the pump was working properly. Station managers hope to have the station's cooling system back to normal later this week. The original pump failed on July 31, disabling one of two coolant loops on the station. Monday's spacewalk was the third devoted to the repair; a fourth may be required to do some cleanup work at the site but has not yet been scheduled.
