Atlas launches military communications satellite

Atlas 5 launch of AEHF 1 (ULA) An Atlas 5 rocket successfully launched the first in a new series of military communications satellites on Saturday morning. The Atlas 5 531 lifted off at 7:07 am EDT (1107 GMT) Saturday from Cape Canaveral and placed the Advanced Extremely High Frequency (AEHF) 1 satellite into a geosynchronous transfer orbit 51 minutes later. The AEHF 1 satellite, built by Lockheed Martin, will be used by the US military to provide jam-resistant communications to troops in the field. The spacecraft, the first of at least three, has more capacity than the entire existing five-satellite Milstar constellation that it is succeeding.
