Boeing wins three-satellite order from Inmarsat

Inmarsat 5 illustration (Boeing) Inmarsat announced Friday that it is ordering three satellites from Boeing as part of a new initiative to provide a global satellite broadband system. Inmarsat will procure three Boeing 702HP satellites, called the Inmarsat-5 series, for its new Global Xpress service. That service will provide a global mobile broadband service at Ka-band for customers in maritime, energy, aeronautical, and government sectors. Inmarsat plans to spend $1.4 billion into develop Global Xpress; how much will be spent for the three satellites was not disclosed. Inmarsat plans to being operations of the system in 2014.
