ISS cooling system malfunctions
Posted: Sun, Aug 1, 2010, 10:55 AM ET (1455 GMT)
ISS illustration (NASA) ISS crew members and engineers on the ground are troubleshooting a problem with the station's cooling system that could require a spacewalk to repair. One of two ammonia cooling systems on the station shut down Saturday night when a circuit breaker on a pump module, setting off alarms and forcing crew members to shut down some station systems. Astronauts reset the circuit breaker, but it tripped again when they restarted the module. The cause of the problem is under investigation. The station nor its crew are in any danger, but the cooling system shutdown has forced them to transfer some experiments and turn off some systems to reduce power consumption and thus heat generation. Repairing the cooling system could require performing two spacewalks to replace the pump module with a spare already on the station.
