Phoenix skips planned trajectory maneuver
Posted: Sun, May 25, 2008, 12:10 PM ET (1610 GMT)
Phoenix Mars lander illustration (Univ. of Arizona) Project managers decided to skip a planned trajectory correction maneuver for NASA's Mars Phoenix spacecraft Saturday night as officials remained confident if anxious about Sunday's landing. The schedule for the landing included a maneuver Saturday night if engineers decided the landing site location needed to be tweaked, but officials decided late Saturday that the maneuver was not needed to ensure the rover came down in the planned landing area in the planet's north polar regions. Earlier in the day officials said they were confident about the mission, although nervous about the impending landing. First notification about Phoenix's landing would come no earlier than 7:53 pm EDT (2353 GMT) Sunday, if all goes well.
