MetOp launch scrubbed

MetOp satellite illustration (ESA) The launch of a European weather satellite was stopped at the last second on Tuesday and has been rescheduled for Wednesday. A Soyuz rocket was scheduled to lift off from the Baikonur Cosmodrome at 12:28 pm EDT (1628 GMT) Tuesday to place the MetOp-A satellite into orbit. However, the countdown stopped with just a few seconds remaining because of an unspecified technical problem. While there was no formal statement from ESA by late Tuesday about the status of the launch, Russian officials said the launch had been rescheduled for the same time on Wednesday. The launch of Europe's first low Earth orbit weather satellite has been delayed several times since this summer, most recently when the spacecraft and its upper stage were dropped a few centimeters during launch preparations.
