Boeing alters commercial satellite line

Boeing 702 updated satellite illustration (Boeing) The Boeing Company announced plans last week to modify its lineup of commercial communications satellite, introducing a modified version of its largest satellite while retiring an aging, smaller model. Boeing officials said the company plans to introduce a lighter version of the Boeing 702 model, the company's largest commercial satellite. The satellite, designated the 702-B, will fill a gap in lineup between its giant 702 and medium-sized 601 models; the new model will also feature on-orbit processing systems that will make it easier for operators to adjust the coverage areas and services offered by the satellite after launch. The company is also planning to retire the Boeing 376, its smallest commercial model. The spin-stabilized satellite, which has been offered since the 1970s, is considered obsolete compared to modern three-axis-stabilized small satellites offered by Orbital Sciences Corporation and other companies.
