Chandra discovers powerful eruption
Posted: Fri, Jan 7, 2005, 9:07 AM ET (1407 GMT)
Black hole eruption (NASA/CXC) NASA's Chandra X-Ray Observatory has discovered what astronomers claim this week to be the most powerful eruption in the universe. The eruption, which has lasted for 100 million years, has been linked to the rapid growth of a supermassive block hole in the center of a galaxy cluster. The eruption was triggered by gravitational waves released when matter weighing about 300 million times that of the Sun fell into the black hole; the source of the matter is unknown. The research was published in this week's issue of the journal Nature.
