NASA making progress on shuttle
Posted: Fri, Aug 27, 2004, 9:23 PM ET (0123 GMT) NASA officials said Thursday that they are making good progress on implementing the recommendations of the Columbia Accident Investigation Board (CAIB) and returning the shuttle to flight. Speaking on the first anniversary of the publication of the CAIB's final report, shuttle managers said they have completed work on five of the 15 recommendations in the report. Those officials said they were also optimistic that they could close out the remaining 10 recommendations by December, setting the stage for a launch of the shuttle Discovery on STS-114 in March 2005. While that launch window is officially over a month long, officials said the actual launch window only runs from March 16-25 because of lighting constraints as well as to avoid interfering with the launch of a Soyuz taxi flight on April 7. Outside experts also noted that the "culture" of the space agency has also changed over the last year and is far more supportive of efforts to ensure safety.
