ISS crew hears mysterious noise again
Posted: Sat, Apr 3, 2004, 12:46 PM ET (1746 GMT)
ISS illustration (NASA) The crew of the International Space Station reported hearing an odd metallic noise on the station early Friday, leading some to suspect the source of the noise may be within the station. Early Friday cosmonaut Alexander Kaleri told ground controllers he heard the noise in the Zvezda module of the station, noting it sounded similar to an unexplained noise heard there in November. The noise, said to sound similar to a flapping sheet of metal, was first thought to possibly come from a tiny piece of orbital debris striking the station, or the flexing of panels on the station's exterior during the rapid day-night cycles in orbit. A spacewalk in February was supposed to investigate this, but was cut short when Kaleri's suit malfunctioned. Ground controllers told Florida Today that they now think the sounds is coming from something within the station, rather than on its exterior. No change was reported in any station systems on Friday.
