EU selects finalists to operate Galileo system
Posted: Sat, Feb 7, 2004, 10:58 AM ET (1558 GMT)
GalileoSat illustration The European Union has selected three consortia as finalists to manage the deployment and operation of the Galileo satellite navigation system. The EU announced Friday that it had selected a "shortlist" of three ventures that will proceed to the second phase of the competition to win the Galileo concession. One of the finalists is a consortium that includes Eutelsat, Hispasat, LogicaCMG, and AENA. The second is a joint venture of Ventures, EADS Space, and Thales. The third finalist is a group that includes Vinci Concessions, Alcatel, and Finmeccanica. EU officials said in a statement that they will select the winning consortium based on both the quality of the consortium as well as the amount of public funding each competing group says it will require. No schedule for announcing the winning consortium was announced, although Alcatel said in a statement is expected the winner to be announced early next year. Galileo, a 30-satellite navigation system designed to compete with the American GPS network, is scheduled to be deployed between 2006 and 2008.
