US, India to expand cooperation on space
Posted: Tue, Jan 13, 2004, 8:45 AM ET (1345 GMT)
The United States and India will increase cooperation on civilian space programs, the White House announced Monday. President Bush, in a statement issued Monday, said the two countries would increase cooperation in several areas, including high-tech trade and civilian nuclear programs in addition to space activities. The statement offered few additional details other than that the countries would make efforts to "enhance cooperation in peaceful uses of space technology." Specific details about any cooperation are expected to be worked out over the next several month. The two countries started discussions on this topic in 2001, after Bush lifted sanctions on India and Pakistan for their cooperation in the war against terrorism. The agreement is part of a deal by India to combat the proliferation of nuclear weapons.
