Lockheed, Northrop to join forces on OSP

Orbital Space Plane illustration (NASA) Lockheed Martin and Northrop Grumman announced late Monday that the two companies would work together to develop a design for NASA's Orbital Space Plane (OSP). Under the agreement Northrop will become Lockheed's "principal teammate and subcontractor" in the competition for the full OSP contract, scheduled to be awarded next summer. Northrop is currently teamed with Orbital Sciences Corporation as one of three groups, along with Lockheed Martin and Boeing, currently performing design studies on the OSP under NASA contract. Northrop will complete its current OSP work before joining forces with Lockheed. What role, if any, Orbital will have with Northrop or the OSP program in general wasn't announced. Space News first reported last Wednesday about the plans for Northrop to team with Lockheed, the same day that a Northrop OSP official, speaking at a conference in California, presented the company's baseline design for the vehicle and offered no indication that the company planned to work with Lockheed.
