Posted: Mon, Jun 2, 2003, 1:47 PM ET (1747 GMT)
The United States and Russia signed a joint statement this weekend promising to continue cooperation in space ventures, but offered few additional details. The two-paragraph statement was signed by US President George W. Bush and Russian President Vladimir Putin during a brief summit meeting the two held Sunday in St. Petersburg, Russia. The document states that the US plans to return the shuttle to flight and that Russia will meet the station's crew and cargo transfer requirements until the shuttle returns to service. The statement also notes that the two countries remain committed to completing the assembly of the ISS as well as unspecified "cooperation in the application of space technology and techniques."
