Boeing wins Malaysian satellite contract
Posted: Fri, Mar 21, 2003, 8:06 PM ET (0106 GMT) Malaysian communications satellite operator Binariang Satellite Systems Sdn. Bhd. announced Friday that it will purchase a communications satellite from Boeing Satellite Systems. Binariang awarded Boeing a contract for MEASAT-3, a Boeing 601HP spacecraft with 24 C-band and 24 Ku-band transponders. The satellite, scheduled for launch in mid-2005, will be co-located with Binariang's MEASAT-1 spacecraft at 91.5 degrees east. The spacecraft will provide video and data services for much of Asia, the Middle East, and Africa. Binariang had previously contracted with Boeing Satellite Systems (then Hughes Space and Communications) for its other two spacecraft, based on the smaller 376 model. Boeing did not reveal the value of the contract, but Binariang said in a Malaysian regulatory filing that the deal was valued at $132.5 million, including ground facility installation and training services. The contract is the second commercial communications satellite order of 2003, after Telesat Canada's order of an Astrium satellite.
