Posted: Wed, Mar 19, 2003, 8:19 PM ET (0119 GMT)
Proton launch (file photo) International Launch Services (ILS) announced Wednesday that it has won a contract to launch a communications satellite for Telesat Canada. ILS will launch Telesat Canada's Anik F1R satellite on a Proton M booster in 2005. Terms of the launch contract were not disclosed. The agreement comes less than three months after ILS launched another Telesat spacecraft, Nimiq 2, on a Proton M. The Anik F1R satellite is a Eurostar 3000 satellite built by Astrium; the satellite manufacturing contract was awarded by Telesat earlier this year. The spacecraft will replace Anik F1, a Boeing 702 spacecraft that has a problem with its solar panel concentrators that will reduce the amount of power it can generate.
