Hunt for "critical" shuttle debris continues
Posted: Tue, Mar 18, 2003, 10:29 AM ET (1529 GMT)
STS-107 patch (NASA) Members of the Columbia Accident Investigation Board (CAIB) said Monday that the search for debris that fell from the shuttle in the minutes before its breakup over Texas continued, with the hope that any such debris could provide new insights into the accident. The CAIB held a public hearing Monday afternoon to take testimony from experts and also discuss the status of the investigation. A new video showed Monday, constructed from amateur video taken of the shuttle's reentry from California to Texas, showed that the shuttle was almost continuously shedding debris while flying over the continental US. CAIB members now believe that debris started coming loose from the orbiter while still over the Pacific Ocean in the initial stages of reentry. While no shuttle debris has been found west of the Texas panhandle, the CAIB hopes that searches still underway in Nevada and Utah can turn up pieces that can help investigators better determine the cause of the accident.
