HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Democratic state Sen. Will Espero said in an interview on Hawaii News Now on Tuesday that he's prepared to represent Hawaii's First Congressional District because of his more than 30 years of work experience, including 15 years in the state Legislature.

"I have a vast amount of experience and different backgrounds that I believe will be very beneficial for the people of Hawaii," he said.

With keeping jobs in the U.S. a large part of his campaign, Espero said he's focusing on an aerospace industry in Hawaii.

"Soon, people are going to see space tourism," Espero said. "We're talking about small satellite launches one day, maybe out of Barking Sands on Kauai which can bring $10 to $20 million per launch."

He said he also wants to promote Hawaii's fashion industry as well as the industrial hemp industry. Other areas that he addressed during the interview included his position on military and veterans affairs, the conflict in Iraq and big businesses.

Comparing his campaign with the Congressional race in Virginia, Espero said the amount of money spent doesn't necessarily reflect the candidate.

"It's not about money, it's not about slick commercials, but rather, a person's experience, their vision, leadership and results," he said. "If you look at my candidacy, I believe we have a very well-rounded candidacy that the people can get behind. I'd be honored to represent the state of Hawaii in Washington D.C. and Congress."
