Arianespace wins contracts for two Korean satellites

Ariane 5 launch of DIRECTV-14 and GSAT-16 (Arianespace) Arianespace announced Friday that it won contracts from a South Korean institute for launches of two weather satellites late this decade. the contract with the Korea Aerospace Research Institute covers the launch of the GEO-KOMPSAT-2A and -2B satellites on Ariane 5 rockets in May 2018 and March 2019, respectively. Each satellite weights 3,500 kilograms and will provide meteorological, space weather, and Earth sciences data from geosynchronous orbit. Arianespace reportedly beat out SpaceX for the launch contracts.
