Range problem delays Atlas launch to April
Posted: Thu, Mar 27, 2014, 6:39 AM ET (1039 GMT)
A damaged radar system at Cape Canaveral has delayed the launch of a classified satellite previously scheduled for this week until April. An Atlas 5 was originally scheduled to lift off Tuesday carrying a satellite for the National Reconnaissance Office on a mission designated NROL-67. That was was postponed Monday because of an issue with the range, and late Wednesday officials said the problem, with a downrange tracking radar, would postpone the launch until no earlier than April 10. Air Force officials didn't go into details about the problem, but one report stated there was "an apparent fire" at the tracking radar facility. There were conflicting reports on whether the radar problem would delay the Falcon 9 launch of a cargo spacecraft to the International Space Station, currently scheduled for Sunday night.
