Posted: Thu, Sep 10, 2009, 7:10 AM ET (1110 GMT)
Hubble image of NGC 6302 (NASA) NASA released on Wednesday some of the first images taken by the Hubble Space Telescope since astronauts repaired the orbiting telescope in May. The images from the telescope's new and repaired instruments pleased astronomers, who said that the enhanced capabilities of the new instruments made the telescope more powerful than ever. The telescope's instruments and other systems were upgraded during the STS-125 shuttle mission, the fifth and final planned servicing mission for the nearly 20-year-old telescope. NASA hopes the upgraded Hubble can remain operational for at least five more years.
