An ambitious plan to inject £360million of fresh funding into Ayrshire is set to go before government ministers.

A bid for an Ayrshire Growth Deal has been drawn up, aiming to secure funding for plans including the Spaceport at Prestwick Airport.

The plan, drawn up in the wake of multi-million pound “city deals” for Glasgow and Aberdeen, hopes to stimulate the area with a swathe of new projects.

In East Ayrshire, the Growth Deal is seeking £120m for investment at the former Johnnie Walker plant and Ayrshire Engineering Park in Kilmarnock.

And in North Ayrshire, the proposed deal would see investment in a medical innovation centre, the i3 enterprise area and Irvine’s harbourside area.

The plans were approved by councils in North and East Ayrshire this week, and will go before South Ayrshire on Thursday before being sent to Scottish Government chiefs.

In a report, North Ayrshire Council’s economic director Karen Yeomans said: “An AGD would provide the Ayrshire authorities and partners with the opportunity to focus on the major interventions which would grow the economy and create employment within the region.”
