Weather satellite malfunctions

GOES-M illustration (NASA) A NOAA weather satellite that provided images and other data for the eastern US has malfunctions, forcing NOAA to put an on-orbit spare into service. The GOES-13 satellite, launched into geosynchronous orbit in 2006, suffered an unexplained malfunction on Sunday that stopped the transmission of data from the spacecraft. NOAA put an on-orbit spare, GOES-14, into service at least until the problem with GOES-13 is corrected.
