Proton launch delayed
Posted: Wed, Jun 20, 2012, 7:23 AM ET (1123 GMT)
The Proton launch of a commercial communications satellite has been postponed perhaps until July because of a problem with the launch vehicle. The Proton M was scheduled to launch Tuesday from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan carrying the SES-5 communications satellite. However, the launch was postponed, first for 24 hours and then until further notice, after technicians noticed "out of tolerance telemetry" from a subsystem on the rocket's first stage. Other reports indicated that the problem was in the "steering gear" in the rocket, and the launch would likely be postponed until July.
